Problems of the industry

Although Europe is the second-largest steel producer in the world, a continuous decline in the number of jobs in the sector is expected (in recent years, the restructuring of the industry has led to 40 000 job losses).

Steel production creates industrial value chains - it is closely linked to downstream industries such as automotive, construction, electronics, mechanical and electrical engineering, which shape most European labour markets and have a significant impact on local economic development.

The employment profile of the steel industry raises serious concerns in Europe. It deserves the attention of the social partners both at the company level and at the regional and international level. It is all the more important to protect workers in this industry and to promote the idea of decent work within the industry.
